The Graduate Program in Tropical Medicine established in 2008, is headquartered at the Institute of Tropical Medicine of São Paulo, the youngest specialized institute at USP. It has over 10,000 square feet of laboratory area, divided into 11 specialized laboratories, one concentration area named Tropical Medicine and International Health, and four research lines: mechanisms of host-pathogen interaction in tropical diseases and international health; serological and molecular biological methods in the context of international health and tropical diseases; epidemiology and control in tropical diseases and international health; study of pathogens diversity and hosts in the context of international health and tropical diseases.

Currently, just over 20 full advisors operate in the program, all very productive (70% receive the CNPq research productivity grant), with considerable number of citations and publications in journals that are relevant to the field of knowledge. The goal of the program is to train specialized human resources in teaching and in the area of research in Tropical Diseases and International Health that will work at institutions of higher quality of learning, both public and private research centers and also in the area of public health policies.
